The Apostrophe Show

Hey, that's cool!

A few years ago, while living in Spain and Argentina, I started collecting things from the internet that made me stop scrolling: odd discoveries, surprising ideas, things I couldn’t stop thinking about. So I made a podcast about them.

The show ran for thirteen episodes, all less than fifteen minutes long and they dive into things I found genuinely interesting, paired with Keynote visuals to make it feel like more than just audio. Every episode closed with a mention of our travel book, No Ticket Home.

All episodes are below (newest first):

What I was looking at:

This was my view when recording the show in Buenos Aires, Argentina (in the Palermo area). Click to enlarge:

Why was it named “The Apostrophe Show”?

There is an amazing song by Imagine Dragons called “Whatever It Takes” (listen here) and one line in the song is:

“I’m an apostrophe i’m just a symbol to remind you that there’s more to see”

That idea became the foundation of the show. A reminder that even though the internet is full of noise and negativity, there are still positive, interesting, and meaningful things worth paying attention to.

What I learned

  • How to record and distribute a solo podcast
  • How to record video and overlay it (picture-in-picture) while keeping everything in sync
  • How to build a visually engaging presentation using Keynote

Thing I wasted time on

  • Those colored tabs on the side of each video? They were meant to represent categories (and segment order) within each episode. For example: yellow was for Travel and purple was for Museums. Each color was represented on the main show artwork as well.
  • In theory, it sounded organized. In reality, it added zero value.

What I’d do differently now

  • Not design artwork that looks like… a silver sperm
  • Bring on a guest for each episode to react to the segments
  • Define a clear target audience first, then secure a sponsor aligned with that audience, and build the show around that partnership
